Introduction
Since 2026, China has introduced a new mandatory academic exam for undergraduate admission to its public universities: the CSCA (China Scholastic Competency Assessment). Bridge to China explains what you need to know, updated with the official session calendar.
What is the CSCA?
Unlike the HSK, which only assesses Chinese language level, the CSCA measures a candidate's overall academic ability to follow a university program in China (mathematics, and depending on the field, physics or chemistry).
Official 2025-2026 session calendar
For the 2026-2027 academic year, two sessions have been confirmed by Chinese embassies relaying information from the China Scholarship Council:
- Session 1: December 21, 2025
- Session 2: January 25, 2026
Candidates may choose either session. A CSCA result is mandatory for application review by eligible Chinese universities, especially for undergraduate applicants.
Who needs to take it?
- International students applying for a Bachelor's degree
- Applicants to CSC and provincial scholarships
- Candidates targeting CSC-qualified public Chinese universities
CSCA subjects
1. Mathematics (mandatory)
Algebra, functions, geometry — about 60 minutes, in Chinese or English.
2. Academic Chinese language
Required for programs taught in Chinese. HSK 4+ holders may be exempted depending on the university.
3. Physics and Chemistry (optional)
Required for science, engineering, medicine and pharmacy programs.
CSCA registration fees
- One subject: 450 RMB
- Two or more subjects: 700 RMB (flat fee)
There is no late fee or penalty tied to the registration date, as long as it is done within the official period.
CSCA and the CSC scholarship
A good CSCA score significantly strengthens your chances of admission and of securing a CSC, provincial or university scholarship.
How to prepare effectively
- Review math fundamentals and the multiple-choice format
- Build academic vocabulary in English and/or Chinese
- Take an HSK beforehand if the program is taught in Chinese
- Get support from a specialized agency so you don't miss a session
Conclusion
The CSCA is now an unavoidable step to study in China at undergraduate level. Bridge to China supports you from choosing your CSCA session to your final admission.
